Why a text message beats an app: the research behind how Mags is built

Every design decision in Mags (the phone number instead of an app, the messages that arrive instead of waiting, the follow-ups that don’t stop at one) traces back to a small set of well-replicated findings in ADHD research. This post lays them out, with sources, so you can check our reasoning rather than take our word for it.

The failure isn’t remembering. It’s remembering at the right time.

Ask an adult with ADHD what they need to do this week and they can usually tell you. The list exists. The problem is what researchers call prospective memory: remembering to do a thing at the moment it needs doing, rather than three hours later in the shower.

This is one of the better-documented deficits in adult ADHD. Controlled studies find adults with ADHD perform significantly worse on time-based prospective memory tasks (the “do X at 4pm” kind) even when their memory for the content itself is fine (Altgassen et al., PLOS ONE, 2013). A 2019 study went further and showed that prospective memory problems partially explain the link between ADHD symptoms and procrastination (Altgassen et al., 2019).

Now look at what a to-do app asks of you. To be useful, it requires you to (1) remember the app exists, (2) open it, (3) at the right moment. Steps 1 through 3 are prospective memory. The standard tool assumes the exact function that’s impaired. That’s not a discipline failure. It’s an architecture failure.

A text message inverts the requirement. It arrives. The remembering happens on our side of the phone.

The point of performance

Dr. Russell Barkley (whose executive-function model shaped most of how clinicians think about ADHD) has a phrase for where help actually works: the point of performance. In his words, ADHD is not a disorder of knowing what to do; it’s a disorder of doing what you know, when it needs doing. So the most effective assistance is delivered “at the point of performance — in the moment, in the place, at the time” the behavior needs to happen, not in a planner reviewed the night before (Barkley, “The Important Role of Executive Functioning and Self-Regulation in ADHD”).

This is the single sentence Mags is built on. A coaching session on Tuesday can’t be at Thursday’s point of performance. An app on page three of your home screen can’t either. A text that lands at 2:40 saying “leave by 2:55”: that’s the point of performance, delivered.

Time blindness is measurable, not a metaphor

“I thought I had time” isn’t an excuse; it’s a replicated lab finding. Reviews of time-perception research in ADHD document consistent differences in time estimation and time reproduction (Ptacek et al., 2019, review), and more recent work argues altered time perception is a focal symptom of adult ADHD, not a side effect (Weissenberger et al., Medical Science Monitor, 2021).

The practical consequence: abstract time (“the meeting is at 3”) doesn’t convert into felt urgency until it’s too late. Mags’ time features (leave-by alerts with an escalating countdown, transition ramps, hyperfocus exits) all do the same one thing: convert clock-time into events that arrive. You can’t feel 3pm approaching. You can feel a text.

Texts demonstrably change behavior: at scale, in trials

The strongest evidence for SMS as a delivery mechanism comes from medicine, where it’s been tested in randomized controlled trials for years. A meta-analysis of 16 RCTs found mobile text reminders roughly doubled the odds of medication adherence in chronic disease (Thakkar et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2016), and systematic reviews across conditions repeatedly find text reminders improve follow-through on the exact category of task (recurring, boring, easy to forget) that executive dysfunction eats first (Kannisto et al., systematic review).

None of these trials were run on ADHD populations specifically, and we won’t pretend otherwise. But note what they show: for neurotypical people, whose prospective memory works, an arriving text still beats self-initiated remembering. The effect should be larger, not smaller, when the self-initiated path is the impaired one.

Why one reminder isn’t enough: the closed loop

Here’s where Mags departs from every reminder app: a single notification assumes that seeing the reminder produces action. For ADHD brains, task initiation is its own separate hurdle: a reminder can be seen, felt, agreed with, and still evaporate.

So Mags treats a reminder as a loop, not an event. She follows up until the thing is done, snoozed with intent, or deliberately dropped, and all three count as closing the loop. Fire-and-forget tools quietly teach their users that notifications are ignorable; a follow-up that arrives because you didn’t answer teaches the opposite. This is a design consequence of the research above rather than a separately tested intervention, and we’re honest about that distinction. It’s also exactly what our pilot phase is designed to measure.

What Mags is not

Stimulant medication is the best-evidenced treatment for ADHD, and structured approaches like CBT and ADHD coaching have real trial support. Mags is not a replacement for any of them and doesn’t want to be. She’s the layer those approaches assume exists and usually doesn’t: something at the point of performance, every day, that doesn’t depend on your memory to work.
